History Of Books And Library

hi, my name is colin maclean. this is one of a series of short videos aboutusing the library. this video is about how books are arrangedon the bookshelves in the library using the dewey decimal classification system. the library uses the dewey decimal classificationsystem for the arrangement of books on the library bookshelves. this system allocates numbers ranging from000 to 999 to specific subject areas. a decimal point is the used to drill downto topics in more detail. this means that books on the same or similairsubjects are located near to each other on

the library bookshelves. so that if you finda book that is of interest at one shelfmark, you will also find books on the same or similairtopic on nearby shelves. nursing and midwifery are classified withnumbers beginning with '61', and these are found on floor 4 of the library. each copy of a book has it's classificationnumber printed on a label on the bottom edge or 'spine' of the book, facing out. this number is called the 'shelfmark'. the letters after the numbers are just thefirst 3 letters of the authors name or of the title, and these are used to help whenfiling the books so that copies of the same

book can sit on the shelves together. this arrangement also means that books todo with subjects such as ethics psychology or sociology are on bookshelves located in aisles elsewherein the library, on floor 3. the library bookstacks may look like a maze, but they do have a structure. in the aisles, books are arranged in baysof usually six shelves high, each about a meter wide. to find a specific book, you may have to browsealong each shelf and down each bay.

the arrangement continues to the top of thenext bay, then down and back up again... and so on to the end of the aisle. the bookstacks can be busy and sometimes getuntidy, so that books may not be in the place they should be when you are looking for them, but library staff will be happy to help youif you're having problems locating a book.
